A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
